James Gunn Addresses Demands to Reboot Iconic DC Animated Series

In response to the success of X-Men ’97, James Gunn has finally acknowledged the requests of fans to reboot Justice League Unlimited.

Despite the widespread success and adoration of Marvel’s X-Men ’97, some DC fans have expressed a desire for James Gunn’s upcoming DCEU to replicate this triumph by rebooting Justice League Unlimited. However, these hopes were dashed when the CEO addressed the claims in a recent statement.

X-Men ’97, a highly successful show on Marvel/Disney+, is a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, which originally aired from 1992 to 1997. The show’s incorporation of mature storylines and traditional animation has contributed to its popularity.

Undoubtedly, with the series’ evident success, numerous DC fans were hopeful that the reboot of Justice League Unlimited, led by Gunn and Peter Safran for the new DCEU, would continue this trend.

Regrettably, those aspirations were crushed when Gunn replied to a fan’s question regarding a JLU reimagining, stating on Threads, “X-Men ’97 is enjoyable because it stands out and is not desperately attempting to conform to the current trends. Thus, I prefer to continue in that direction.”

It is understandable that Gunn would not want to revive Justice League Unlimited, as the show is essentially a continuation of Justice League, which aired from 2001 to 2004.

Similar to X-Men ’97, Justice League Unlimited also received acclaim for its skillful portrayal of intricate character narratives, innovative implementation of overarching plotlines, and standalone installments that focused on individual character struggles.

Looking back, it can be seen that Gunn had done all he could with JLU, as the show had already achieved what X-Men ’97 is currently attempting.

Gunn has been extremely open about his and Safran’s plans for the DCEU to begin anew, without any connections to previous films or shows. They are also bringing in new actors to portray iconic roles, such as the upcoming cast for Superman: Legacy.

Nevertheless, for those who are searching for an animated DC project to anticipate, Creature Commandos will be premiering on Max later this year.

You can stay updated on the upcoming DC projects and explore various theories surrounding the finale of X-Men ’97.
